Visa Tips
1. Visa-Free Policy
China has a visa-free policy for citizens of certain countries. This means that nationals from these countries can enter China without obtaining a visa in advance for short stays (within 30 days). As of 2024, China has expanded its visa-free entry policy to include 38 countries. Here are some examples from each continent:
- Europe: Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Holland, Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Slovenia, Slovakia, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Andorra, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Malta, Estonia, Latvia.
- Asia: Japan, Korea, Brunei, Malaysia.
- Oceania: Australia, New Zealand.
For the most up-to-date information, please visit the official website of the China Visa Application Center and the official website of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is important for travelers to check the specific requirements and conditions of the visa-free policy, such as the validity of their passport and the purpose of their visit, to ensure a smooth entry process.
2. 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit Policy
China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy allows eligible foreign travelers to enter China and stay for up to 10 days without a visa when transiting to a third country or region. This policy applies to citizens from 54 countries, including US and many European nations. To qualify, travelers must hold a valid passport with at least three months of remaining validity and have a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region. Below is an example to which the policy is applicable:
- One can book a direct flight to Shenzhen/Guangzhou with secure ferry tickets to Hong Kong (ticket website: TurboJET). For the return journey, one needs to take a flight departing from Hong Kong.
Here are some “counter-examples” that will NOT work:
- Taking direct flights to Hong Kong or Shenzhen in both ways.
- First taking flight to Hong Kong and later returning from Shenzhen.
For the most up-to-date information, please visit the official website of the National Immigration Administration. It is important for travelers to check the specific requirements and conditions of the 240-Hour visa-free policy to ensure a smooth entry process.
